When Standard Contacts and Glasses Aren't Enough

Not every eye can be corrected with a standard soft contact lens or a pair of glasses. Irregular corneas, high astigmatism, keratoconus, and severe dry eye create optical challenges that mass-produced lenses simply cannot solve. Patients with these conditions are often told they are “not candidates for contacts” — but that usually means they haven't been fitted with the right lens.

Medical and specialty contact lenses are custom-designed devices that correct vision by creating an optically perfect surface over an irregular cornea, while also providing therapeutic benefits like constant hydration and corneal protection.

Conditions We Treat

Who Benefits from Specialty Lenses?

Keratoconus

Progressive corneal thinning and steepening that causes increasingly distorted vision.

Post-Surgical Irregularity

Corneal distortion after LASIK, PRK, or corneal transplant surgery.

Severe Dry Eye

Scleral lenses provide continuous lubrication by bathing the cornea in preservative-free saline.

High Astigmatism

Prescriptions beyond the correction range of standard soft toric lenses.

Corneal Scarring

Optical irregularities from prior injury, infection, or inherited corneal dystrophies.

Extreme Prescriptions

Very high myopia or hyperopia that soft lenses cannot adequately correct.

Important: If you've been told you can't wear contact lenses, a specialty lens consultation may change that. Many of our patients achieve better vision and comfort than they ever had with glasses.

Lens Options

Types of Specialty Lenses We Fit

Most Prescribed

Scleral Lenses

Large-diameter lenses that vault over the cornea, trapping a saline reservoir for constant hydration. Ideal for keratoconus, severe dry eye, and irregular corneas. Most patients find them more comfortable than soft lenses.

Best of Both

Hybrid Lenses

A rigid gas-permeable center for sharp optics surrounded by a soft skirt for comfort and stability. An excellent middle ground for patients needing better vision than soft lenses but preferring a soft-lens feel.

Proven Classic

RGP Lenses

Smaller corneal rigid lenses that provide excellent oxygen transmission and optical clarity. A proven choice for moderate keratoconus, high astigmatism, and high prescriptions.

Tailored Comfort

Custom Soft Lenses

Manufactured to your exact parameters when stock soft lenses fall short — combining soft comfort with a custom optical design for unusual prescriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specialty Contact Lens FAQ

What are scleral contact lenses?

Scleral lenses are large-diameter, rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that vault entirely over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). A reservoir of preservative-free saline is trapped between the lens and the cornea, providing constant hydration and an optically smooth surface. This makes them ideal for irregular corneas, severe dry eye, and complex prescriptions that standard contacts cannot correct.

Who is a candidate for specialty contact lenses?

Specialty lenses are designed for patients who cannot achieve satisfactory vision or comfort with standard soft contacts or glasses. Common candidates include people with keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-LASIK or post-corneal transplant irregularity, severe dry eye, high astigmatism, and very high prescriptions. If you have been told you "can't wear contacts," a specialty lens consultation may change that.

Are scleral lenses comfortable?

Most patients find scleral lenses remarkably comfortable — often more comfortable than standard soft contacts. Because the lens vaults over the cornea without touching it and the saline reservoir provides constant lubrication, there is minimal friction and no corneal contact. Many dry eye patients report their eyes feel better with scleral lenses in than without them.

How long does a specialty lens fitting take?

The initial fitting appointment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and includes detailed corneal mapping, lens selection, and trial lens evaluation. Most patients require 1 to 3 follow-up visits to fine-tune the fit for optimal vision and comfort. Dr. Patel personally oversees every step of the fitting process.

Does insurance cover specialty contact lenses?

Medical contact lenses prescribed for conditions like keratoconus are often covered under medical insurance (not just vision insurance) because they are considered medically necessary. Our team at PersonalEyes will verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage before we begin the fitting process.
