More Than a Prescription — A Custom Fit

A contact lens prescription is not the same as a glasses prescription. Contact lenses sit directly on the eye, so a proper fitting requires additional measurements of your corneal shape, pupil size, tear film quality, and eyelid anatomy. At PersonalEyes Vision Care, every contact lens fitting begins with a comprehensive eye exam followed by specialized testing to ensure your lenses correct your vision, fit properly, and maintain your eye health.

Whether you are a first-time wearer or switching from another practice, Dr. Patel will take the time to find the lens that works best for your unique eyes. We fit everything from daily disposables to specialty scleral lenses — because no two eyes are the same.

Good to know: Contact lens prescriptions expire after one year. An annual contact lens exam ensures your prescription is current, your lenses still fit properly, and your eyes remain healthy.

What We Fit

Contact Lens Options

Daily Disposables

Fresh lenses every day — the healthiest, most convenient option. No cleaning, no cases, no buildup. Ideal for allergies and dry eyes.

Toric Lenses (Astigmatism)

Precision-designed lenses that correct astigmatism with stable, consistent vision throughout the day.

Multifocal Lenses

See clearly at all distances without reading glasses. Advanced optics designed for presbyopia patients over 40.

Scleral & Specialty Lenses

Custom-designed large-diameter lenses for keratoconus, irregular corneas, severe dry eye, and post-surgical eyes.

Myopia Control Lenses

Specialty contact lenses designed to slow myopia progression in children, including MiSight and orthokeratology options.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses

Durable, custom-made lenses that provide exceptionally sharp vision — ideal for high prescriptions, astigmatism, and patients who want crisp optics beyond what soft lenses can deliver.

The Process

Your Contact Lens Fitting — Step by Step

Step 1

Comprehensive Exam

We start with a full eye health evaluation and refraction to determine your base prescription. This ensures your eyes are healthy enough for contact lens wear and identifies any conditions that may affect lens selection.

Step 2

Measurements & Fitting

Corneal topography maps the curvature of your eye. We also assess your tear film quality, pupil size, and eyelid anatomy to select the ideal lens material, diameter, and base curve for your eyes.

Step 3

Trial & Follow-Up

You wear trial lenses and we evaluate the fit, vision, and comfort. New wearers receive hands-on training for insertion and removal. Follow-up visits fine-tune the fit until everything is perfect.

Specialty Fittings

Hard-to-Fit Eyes? We Specialize in That.

If you have been told you cannot wear contact lenses — or if you have tried contacts and given up — we encourage you to schedule a consultation. Dr. Patel has extensive experience fitting patients with challenging prescriptions and corneal conditions.

  • Keratoconus — scleral and hybrid lenses that vault over the irregular cornea for clear, stable vision
  • Post-surgical corneas — custom lenses for eyes after LASIK, PRK, corneal transplant, or cataract surgery
  • Severe dry eye — scleral lenses that bathe the cornea in a reservoir of tears throughout the day
  • High prescriptions — custom soft or rigid lenses for extreme myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
  • Presbyopia — advanced multifocal designs that eliminate the need for reading glasses

Insurance & Coverage

Medically Necessary Contact Lenses

Many patients don’t realize that their vision plan or medical insurance may cover contact lenses when they are deemed medically necessary. Unlike elective contact lens wear, medically necessary lenses are prescribed to treat a specific eye condition where glasses alone cannot provide adequate vision correction.

Conditions That May Qualify

  • Keratoconus — progressive corneal thinning that causes distorted vision not fully correctable with glasses
  • Corneal irregularity — from trauma, surgery (post-LASIK, post-transplant), or disease
  • High anisometropia — a large difference in prescription between the two eyes that causes intolerable image size disparity in glasses
  • Aphakia — absence of the natural lens after cataract surgery without an implant
  • High myopia or hyperopia — extreme prescriptions where glasses become impractically thick and distort peripheral vision
  • Severe dry eye — when scleral lenses are required to protect and hydrate the corneal surface

How Coverage Works

Most major vision plans — including VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, and Spectera — provide enhanced benefits for medically necessary contact lenses that go beyond the standard contact lens allowance. In many cases, medical insurance (such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, or UnitedHealthcare) may also cover medically necessary lenses when billed as a medical claim rather than a routine vision claim.

Dr. Patel will determine whether your condition qualifies, document the medical necessity, and our team will work with your insurance to maximize your benefits. Many patients are surprised to learn that their specialty lenses are partially or fully covered.

Not sure if you qualify? Schedule a consultation and we will evaluate your condition and verify your insurance benefits before you commit to anything. There is no obligation — just answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contact Lens Exam FAQ

Is a contact lens exam different from a regular eye exam?

Yes. A contact lens exam includes all the components of a comprehensive eye exam plus additional measurements specific to contact lens fitting — including corneal curvature, pupil size, tear film evaluation, and lid assessment. These measurements ensure your lenses fit properly, correct your vision accurately, and remain comfortable throughout the day.

How long does a contact lens fitting take?

An initial contact lens fitting typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, including the comprehensive eye exam, measurements, trial lens application, and instruction on insertion and removal. Follow-up visits are usually 15 to 30 minutes to evaluate the fit and fine-tune your prescription.

Can anyone wear contact lenses?

Most people can wear contact lenses successfully, including patients with astigmatism, presbyopia, dry eyes, and high prescriptions. Dr. Patel offers a wide range of lens designs — including daily disposables, toric lenses, multifocal lenses, and specialty scleral lenses — to find the right solution for your eyes and lifestyle.

How much do contact lens exams and fittings cost?

Contact lens exam fees vary depending on the complexity of the fitting. Most vision insurance plans cover a portion of the contact lens exam and provide an allowance toward lenses. Our team will verify your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate before your appointment.

What contact lens brands do you carry?

We fit all major contact lens brands including Acuvue, Dailies, Biofinity, Air Optix, Precision1, and many more. Dr. Patel selects the lens that best matches your prescription, corneal shape, tear film, and wearing schedule — rather than defaulting to a single brand.
